Game Boy

Portable console released in 1989

Unlike the Game & Watch series, the Game Boy could simply change games by swapping cartridges. The initial model was 8-bit with a 4 color screen. The later model, the Game Boy Color, upped this number to 54 simultaneous colours.

Game Boy Pocket

The Game Boy Pocket is a smaller, lighter model of the Game Boy, with an improved LCD screen, opting for a light gray monochrome screen rather than an ill-coloured green screen. Also changed is the battery slot, which now only takes two AAA batteries (instead of four AA batteries), at the cost of some battery life (10 hours instead of 15 hours). Some of the earliest released Game Boy Pockets also lack a power indicator light; this was an attempt at cutting production costs, though it was quickly reintroduced due to criticism from fans. The link cable port was also considered to be cut, though developers fought to keep it and the feature was later vindicated by the success of "Pokemon".

Game Boy Pocket Battery Pack

The Battery Pack is a rechargeable battery pack that is compatible with the Game Boy Pocket, Light and Color models, providing an extra 8-10 hours of battery life depending on the model. This accessory was sold only in Japan, with or without the charger (MGB-003).

Game Boy Pocket Charger

The Charger is used to charge the Battery Pack (MGB-002), requiring roughly 10-12 hours to fully charge the Battery Pack from zero charge. This charger was sold only in Japan, only alongside the Battery Pack.

Game Boy Pocket Game Link Cable Adapter

The Game Link Cable Adapter is a conversion adapter, required for the Game Boy Pocket, Light and Color models to communicate with the original Game Boy model. To cut production costs, the Pocket, Light and Color models were all given smaller Game Link Cable ports, making them physically incompatible with the original Game Link Cable without this adapter.

Game Boy Pocket AC Adapter

The AC Adapter allows for the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light and Game Boy Color to be played without the need for batteries.

Game Boy Camera

The Game Boy Camera is a simple 4-bit monochrome digital camera, that inserts into the Game Boy via the cartridge slot and is activated like a standard game. The camera can be pivoted to face inwards and outwards, which functions similarly to a modern day smartphone's "selfie camera". This accessory was released in a few different colours that match existing Game Boy console colours, likely as part of Nintendo's attempts to market the accessory as fashionable.

Game Boy Printer

The Game Boy Printer is a monochrome thermal printer, that connects to the Game Boy console via a Game Boy Pocket Game Link Cable (MGB-008). Being a thermal printer, similar to a receipt printer commonly seen in shops, the device doesn't require ink as it burns the image into the chemical coating of the thermal paper. The device runs on 6 AA batteries and is compatible with a sizeable amount of games, including "Game Boy Camera", "Super Mario Bros. Deluxe" and "Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition".

Game Boy Pocket Game Link Cable

The Game Link Cable for the Game Boy Pocket allows for two consoles to be connected for multiplayer games. This cable has plugs for the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light and Game Boy Color; to connect these models to an original Game Boy, you must use either the Game Boy Pocket link cable adapter (MGB-004) or the universal link cable (MGB-010).

Game Boy Printer Paper

The Game Boy Printer Paper is the thermal paper required for the Game Boy Printer. Really, it's no different from regular thermal printer, but it's cut to a specific size where it can be easily loaded into the Game Boy Printer for usage. The paper came in three colours: yellow with a black burn-in, blue with a black burn-in and white with a sepia burn-in.

Universal Game Link Cable

This Universal Game Link Cable is a link cable that can connect a Game Boy model to any other model of Game Boy. On one end of the cable is a new link connector compatible with the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light and Game Boy Color. In the middle of the cable is a splitter, and on the opposite end are two cables: one with a new link connector and one with an old, allowing an original Game Boy model to connect. Due to this, almost any combination of Game Boy models can use this cable (except an original Game Boy communicating with another original Game Boy). This cable was sold separately in Japan, but was bundled with the Game Boy Printer in America and Europe.

Game Boy Light

The Game Boy Light is an updated model of the Game Boy Pocket, boasting a new back light using inorganic electroluminescence, a fairly primitive form of lighting a display. The only other change is that this model now uses 2 AA batteries, giving it 12-20 hours of battery life, depending on if the back light is turned on or off. This model was only released in Japan, as the Game Boy Color was announced immediately after its release, killing any chance it had on the market.
